Industry Trends

  • Oil prices have hit record highs (US$100 on 3 January 2008) and the boom times look likely to continue.

  • Companies worldwide are investing in technology to take full advantage of this boom and also for the next up cycle.

  • In the 1980s: Singapore O & M companies invested heavily in CAD software

  • Similarly in the 21st century: Companies are investing in computer aided engineering (CAE) software

  • CAE tools are improving turnaround times for faster time to market. This is important as demand is exceeding supply and many companies are seeing their resources stretched

  • Demanding and quality-conscious customers require CAE tools for optimized designs

    Why ANSYS?

  • ANSYS offers the Marine & Offshore Industry an integrated and complete range of solutions

  • ANSYS offers a wide selection of industry-proven, powerful, yet easy-to-use Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Hydrodynamics simulation tools

  • ANSYS' undisputed leadership in providing coupled-field Multiphysics analyses allows real-world simulation

  • ANSYS offers users the Best Of Class solutions in a seamless and integrated platform that that is easy-to-use and highly customisable.

ANSYS Solutions For The Marine/Offshore Industry

  • FEA – Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS)

    • Addresses unique concerns of pure structural simulations

    • Power of nonlinear and linear structural capabilities to deliver the highest-quality, most reliable structural simulation results available

    • Easily simulates even the largest and most intricate structures.

  • Hydrodynamics Analysis (AQWA)

    • Integrated suite of modules which addresses the vast majority of analysis requirements associated with the hydrodynamic assessment of all types of offshore/marine structure

    • From spars to FPSOs, from mooring systems to buoys, from TLPs to semi-submersibles, from fishing vessels to large ships and from large ships to structure interaction.

  • CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis (FLUENT / CFX)

    • Allows more efficient design of new equipment like jack-ups, semi-submersibles, FPSOs, hull forms, propeller shapes, exhaust stacks or engine cooling systems

    • Why waste time and effort with inefficient hand calculations, costly experimental trials involving towing tanks or laboratory scale mock-ups?

    • Preliminary testing using analysis helps narrow the design possibilities.

  • Gas Explosions & Blast Effects (AutoReaGas)

    • Designed for scenarios where there is significant congestion (pipework and equipment)

    • Safety and risk analysis of both offshore (including platforms, FPSOs) and onshore (chemical and power plants, mining and transportation) facilities

    • AutoReaGas results data can be readily exported to structural analysis software

Testimonials

"Shipbuilders must respond quickly to changing customer requirements. In addition, increasing trade with China has seen demand increase for both high-speed and larger vessels. To satisfy owners' requirements quickly, SHI is investing heavily in advanced computer-aided engineering (CAE) solutions, including ANSYS. Many commercial CFD codes were tested, but ANSYS showed the best results.  As CFD software has matured, SHI believes that ship design based on CFD simulation is one of the most important steps to ensure that a design meets the customer's requirements for design and quality."

C.B. Hong - Research Engineer

Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, Korea

“Moffatt & Nichol has been using AQWA since 1996 and has utilized many of the features in the software to their fullest extent. The technical support that we receive is responsive and insightful.  Century Dynamics are constantly working to improve and add to the capabilities of their software and have been very receptive to our suggestions and requests for new capabilities, among which were the addition of QTF solutions necessary for shallow water hydrodynamics.”

Rod Iwashita – Moffatt & Nichol, USA

“We have used ANSYS CFX for several important projects, primarily related to turbomachinery design applications. Without CFX, there was no way to predict or analyze the impact of the flow conditions that would be encountered with any degree of certainty. With CFX, one can obtain an understanding of the effects of various conditions on the flow fields and literally push the state-of-the-art for many design cases. Time and later testing has demonstrated ANSYS CFX to be a reliable and indispensable tool in our design and analysis efforts.”

John Purnell - Senior Engineer

CDI Marine, USA

“We selected AutoReaGas based on its superior performance during the Spadeadam tests and were particularly impressed by the quality of training and support we received when getting to grips with AutoReaGas for the first time. Using AutoReaGas has allowed us to offer an integrated service to our clients, providing a major component of a holistic approach to the study of HSE issues and major hazard analysis. AutoReaGas is an essential ingredient in our CFD armory, allowing us to remain competitive within the market place.”

Dr. K.H. Littlebury - Managing Director
Mobius Dynamics
